Martin Marietta's experience with ablative air vanes dates to the 1950s with the development of the Pershing I missile. In 1969, Martin Marietta Orlando Aerospace demonstrated net molding and primary bonding on the Sprint air vanes, and also the potential cost savings during manufacturing. However, the high pressures required for molding caused excessive deflections of the metallic substructure. Pershing II (PII), started in the 1970s, used proven air vane technologies developed for Sprint. The...

This report describes the formulation, molding, testing, and delivery of new tank track pads and belts of pads to TACOM. It includes the study of hundreds of new formulations, which contained various elastomer formulations, fillers and reinforcing fibers. Prototype molds were fabricated. M60 pads and rolls of M1 pads were delivered to TACOM for road tests. Polyurethane elastomers that are specifically formulated for this application will be the best choice for obtaining great improvements in...

This paper describes the evaluation and acquisition of CAD/CAM technology required for the design and development of complex sculptured surfaces for molding rubber and elastomeric materials. Benchmark tests incorporating the complex 3-D geometry that such a design project must handle were performed with various systems vendors and a time-sharing system was chosen. Geometry was constructed using bi-parametric cubic patches and cutter paths were plotted over these surfaces. A post-processor has...

Experiments wre performed to evaluate the effects of cure and sizing on the bond strength between graphite fibre bundles and epoxy resins. Fiberite 976 and 934 resins and Thornel T300 (3K) fibers were used in the tests. The fibers were either uncoated (no sizing) or coated with different types of sizing. Pure resin specimens containing a single coated or uncoated fiber bundle were prepared by curing in a mold at different temperatures. The specimens were subjected to three point bending, and...

The design and development of an electro-explosive device embodying a spark gap shunted by a semiconductive material is reported. The intent of this design is to render the device immune to stray radio frequency energy. Various investigations and tests conducted during the report period are included. Improvements were made in the manufacture of the ceramic squib bodies. Methods of high-temperature sealing were investigated. Squibs in quantity were built and tested. These tests are reported.

A urethane foam formulation has been developed to produce foamed-in-place helmet liners for Air Force crash or flying helmets. High density urethane foam helmet liners has been foamed-in-place directly on the flying crew member's head, producing a perfectly fitting helmet liner with a minimum of time, labor and inconvenience. These liners were produced at an extremely modest cost. Design and fabrication of a suitable mold in which the helmet liner is foamed has demonstrated that the concept of...

One method of reducing styrene emissions from vinyl ester (VE) and unsaturated polyester resins (UPE) is to replace some or all of the styrene with fatty acid-based monomers. Methacrylated fatty acid (MFA) monomers are ideal candidates because they are inexpensive, have low volatilities, and free-radically polymerize with vinyl ester. The viscosity of VE resins using these fatty acid monomers ranged from 700 2000 cP, which is considerably higher than that of VE/styrene resins (100 cP). In...

The purpose of this research is to formulate polyurethane 1) for use in composites or coatings that contain isosorbide as part or all of the polyol phase and 2) that can be easily molded or cast into a film at ambient conditions. Solubility studies were conducted to determine the maximum amount of isosorbide that could remain in solution with other diols. Formulation of polyurethanes using isosorbide as part or all of the polyol phase combined with monomers such as toluene diisocyanate (TDI)...

A program of trafficability tests was conducted in unconfined muskeg areas at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, with four tracked vehicles: an M116 amphibious cargo carrier, an M59 armored personnel carrier, an M41 combat tank, and an M60A1 combat tank. Self-propelled, go-no go tests were conducted with all four vehicles; maximum-drawbar-pull tests were conducted with the M116, the M59, and the M41; and cross-country speed tests were conducted with the M116 and M59. Results indicate that a combination...

In previous work, the room temperature mechanical properties of an Al-10Mg-0.1Zr alloy were evaluated after simulated, superplastic forming at a temperature of 300 C (573K). A variation of ductility from 1 to 14% elongation was observed in the room temperature test data. To examine the cause of this variability, the processing schedule was changed to one incorporating more severe reductions during rolling. This resulted in a lesser range of variability in room temperature ductility, but the...

Pursuant to a previous report, an effort has been made to continue to find higher performance materials for the design of windshields. A product that the U.S. Army Research Laboratory provides the test and evaluation community is a yawsonde, now termed 'diagnostic fuze' or 'D-fuze. This device is capable of sensing the inertial environment of a cannon-launched projectile and telemetering the live data to a ground station. In order to telemeter data in flight, the antenna has to radiate through...

In order to elucidate the role of fiber architecture and test geometry on the impact behavior of 3-D braided composites, 3-D braided preforms having thicknesses varying form 0.3 in. to 1.0 in. were prepared for resin transfer molding with a vinylester resin system. Angle ply composites were fabricated for comparison with the 3-D composites to investigate the role of yarn interlacing in their dynamic impact response. The yarn interlacing was found to play an important role in raising the...

The efficiency of mechanical clamps applied to the molded boot of the MIL-C-24231 (Portsmouth) underwater connector was investigated. A mission profile for underwater connectors was prepared and used to design laboratory test sequences to evaluate connector leakage. A test connector was designed that incorporated the important features of the Portsmouth connector with the addition of leakage monitors in the construction so that leakage paths in the connector could be identified during test....

An efficient numerical scheme is presented for simulating isothermal flow in resin transfer molding (RTM). The problem involves transient, free-surface flow of an incompressible fluid into a nondeforming porous medium. A new variant of the control volume finite element (CVFE) algorithm is explained in detail. It is shown how the pressure solutions at each time step can be obtained by adding a single row and column to the Cholesky factorization of the stiffness matrix derived from a...

A method is presented by which the modulus obtained from a stress relaxation test can be used to estimate the modulus which would be obtained from a sonic vibration test. The method was applied to stress relaxation, sonic vibration, and high speed stress-strain data which was obtained on a flexible epoxy. The modulus as measured by the three test methods was identical for identical test times, and a change of test temperature was equivalent to a shift in the logarithmic time scale. An estimate...
